Example output (Nature)

Fig. 1 | Protein abundance after treatment. a, Representative western blot with molecular weight markers. b, Quantification of protein abundance. Data are mean ± s.e.m.; n = 3 biologically independent experiments. P values were calculated by two-way ANOVA with Šídák’s multiple-comparisons test.

How to write a figure legend

  1. 1Upload the figure

Choose the figure you want to describe.

  2. 2Add what the image cannot show

Add n, error bars and the test.

  3. 3Check and copy

Fill gaps, check numbers and copy.

Figure legend FAQ

What is a figure legend?

The text that accompanies a figure: a title stating what the figure shows, a description of each panel, and the information needed to read it on its own — what error bars show, what n counts, which test produced each P value, and scale bars.

Figure legend vs. caption: what is the difference?

Mostly. Biomedical journals such as Nature and Cell say “legend”; APA Style and many other fields say “caption”. This tool writes both.

How do I write a figure legend?

Start with a one-sentence title for the whole figure, write one or two sentences per panel describing what is shown, then define statistics, sample sizes, scale bars and abbreviations. The checklist flags what is missing. Cumming et al. (2007).

Which journal formats are supported?

Nature, Cell Press, PLOS ONE, Science, APA Style and a generic format. Each changes the figure label, panel labels and statistics wording; always check your journal’s current author guidelines.

How is an APA figure caption formatted?

The figure number in bold above the figure, the title in italic title case on the next line, and a Note below the figure for explanations, abbreviations and probability values.

Can I copy a LaTeX figure caption or paste it into Word?

Copy legend keeps bold and italic when pasted into Word or Google Docs. The Copy menu also gives plain text, LaTeX and Markdown.

What does the AI do, and what does it cost?

It reads visible figure details and uses only facts in your notes. Missing information becomes placeholders, and new numbers are highlighted for checking. Each write or polish uses 10 credits and requires a free account. Formatting and the checklist are free.

Is my figure or research text stored?

When you write, your figure and notes are sent to our AI provider. If safety checks are enabled, your image is uploaded to an image provider's temporary file address and sent to the moderation provider for image checks, and your notes are sent to the moderation provider for text checks. Figran does not store them on its servers; we record character counts, image size and credit usage. Drafts stay in this browser tab.

Can it read my figure?

It can read panels, figure types, axes and scale bars. Supply sample sizes, tests, error bars and other facts the image cannot show; otherwise they remain placeholders.
