All formats share the 127.76 × 85.48 mm footprint of ANSI/SLAS 1-2004, and wells are named by row letter and column number, so A1 is the top-left well.

Only 96, 384 and 1536 well plates have standard well positions (ANSI/SLAS 4-2004); 6 to 48 well positions follow Corning Costar plates, and other brands can differ by a few millimeters.

96 well plate template FAQ

What is a 96 well plate template or plate map?

A 96 well plate has 8 rows (A–H) and 12 columns (1–12). A template is the empty grid; a plate map, or plate layout, records what goes in each well: standards, samples, controls and blanks. This page makes both and exports SVG, PNG and CSV.

How are the wells numbered?

Rows are letters and columns are numbers, so with the lettered edge on your left the top-left well is A1 and the bottom-right well is H12. A 384 well plate runs from A1 to P24. Some instruments write A01; the CSV import accepts both. ANSI/SLAS 4-2004 requires the A1 corner to be marked on the plate; many plates also have a cut corner, but where it sits varies by manufacturer.

Can I print a blank 96 well plate template or save it as PDF?

Yes. The blank templates are drawn at the real plate size, 127.76 × 85.48 mm. Download the SVG or PNG and print at 100% scale (turn off "fit to page") for an actual-size sheet on A4 or Letter. To get a PDF, open the SVG in your browser and choose Print, then Save as PDF.

Can I export the layout to Excel?

Export CSV as Grid for an 8 × 12 table that opens directly in Excel with row letters and column numbers, or as Long for one row per well (well, group, sample, concentration, unit, note) for an ELN, R or Python. Both files are UTF-8, so units such as µM display correctly. Download XLSX gives the same grid with each well's cell filled in its group color.

Which plate formats are supported, and what are their dimensions?

6, 12, 24, 48, 96 and 384 well plates, all on the 127.76 × 85.48 mm ANSI/SLAS footprint. Well positions for 96 and 384 well plates follow ANSI/SLAS 4-2004 (9 mm and 4.5 mm spacing); 6 to 48 well plates have no well-position standard, so they follow Corning Costar plates, and other brands can differ by a few millimeters. 1536 well plates are not supported because labels do not fit in 2.25 mm wells.

How do I lay out a serial dilution or a standard curve?

Select the first well, choose Serial dilution, and set the direction, starting concentration, dilution factor (2, 3, 10, half-log or custom), number of points and replicates. The concentrations are written into each well and the CSV. A series that would run off the plate is rejected rather than cut short. Replicates copies a column of samples into duplicates or triplicates.

Should standards, blanks and controls go on the edge of the plate?

Edge wells evaporate faster and warm and cool differently from inner wells, which can bias cell-based assays. Common responses are to fill the outer ring with medium or buffer and leave it out of the analysis, or to let newly seeded plates rest at room temperature before incubation (Lundholt et al., 2003). ELISA and qPCR layouts often put standards and no-template controls in the first or last columns for easier pipetting, and screening plates often reserve columns 1–2 and 23–24 for controls. Edge fills these positions in one step.

How do I use the plate map in a paper or lab notebook?

For a methods or supplementary figure, switch to Grayscale so groups stay distinct by pattern in black-and-white print, and download SVG to edit the text in Illustrator, Inkscape or PowerPoint. Plates with up to 96 wells can open in the Figran canvas to add arrows and combine panels. For a lab notebook, print the PNG or keep the CSV with your records.

Is it free, and is my layout private?

Yes. Drawing and downloads need no account, and your layout stays in this browser; a draft is kept in local storage on this device. Opening it in the canvas needs a free account; it is saved to your account when you save in the canvas, and using the canvas AI assistant sends the figure's content to the AI provider.
