How to make a logic model

  1. 1Pick a format and name the columns

Choose Kellogg, CDC, UW Extension or NIFA and adjust the column names.

  2. 2Fill in the model or paste a table

Enter inputs, activities, outputs and outcomes, or paste from Word or Excel.

  3. 3Link boxes and download

Add links, assumptions and external factors, then download your model.

Logic model components: inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes and impact

ComponentQuestion it answersExamplesTime frame
InputsWhat we investStaff, funding, partners, facilities, materialsBefore and during the program
ActivitiesWhat we doTraining, services, outreach, curriculaDuring the program
OutputsWhat we getSessions held, people reached, materials producedDuring the program
Short-term outcomesWhat we achieveChanges in knowledge, attitudes and skills1–3 years (Kellogg)
Intermediate / long-term outcomesWhat we achieveChanges in behavior, practice or policy4–6 years (Kellogg)

Read the model as an if–then chain: if resources support activities, then those activities produce outputs and contribute to outcomes.

Logic model FAQ

What is a logic model?

A program logic model, also called program logic or programme logic, is a diagram that connects inputs, activities, outputs and outcomes in an if–then chain. The CDC Program Evaluation Framework describes it as a graphic depiction of the relationship between program activities and intended outcomes. Use one to plan a program, explain it in a proposal or prepare an evaluation.

What are the components of a logic model?

Kellogg uses Resources/Inputs, Activities, Outputs, Outcomes and Impact. CDC divides outcomes into short-term, intermediate and long-term. UW Extension and NIFA include situation, assumptions and external factors; UW divides outputs into activities and participation, while NIFA divides outcomes into knowledge, actions and conditions. REL uses a problem statement. You can rename the columns in every format.

What is the difference between a logic model and a theory of change?

A logic model summarizes what a program does, produces and expects to change. As the Center for Theory of Change describes it, a theory of change explains why change is expected, often working backward from a long-term goal through preconditions and assumptions. It can be nonlinear. Kellogg treats a theory approach as one type of logic model; many teams develop a theory of change first, then summarize it as a logic model.

Is a logic model the same as a logframe?

A logframe is a matrix with rows for Goal, Purpose, Outputs and Activities and columns for the narrative summary, indicators, means of verification and assumptions. Developed for USAID in 1969, it is often used in international development. A logic model shows the relationships between program activities and results; it does not include indicator columns. You can use a logic model to prepare a logframe.

How do I write short-term, medium-term and long-term outcomes?

Write measurable changes describing who changes and what changes. Kellogg describes outcomes over 1–3 and 4–6 years, with impact over 7–10 years. CDC distinguishes immediate, intermediate and desired long-term results. NIFA moves from knowledge to actions to conditions. Outcomes describe changes, not the activities themselves.

Can I use the logic model in Word, PowerPoint or Google Docs?

Download a blank Word table in any of the four formats. For a completed model, use Copy table to paste into Word or Google Docs, or download PNG or SVG. In PowerPoint, use PNG or insert SVG and choose Convert to Shape. The blank template prints on US Letter landscape paper.

How do I use a logic model in a grant proposal or evaluation plan?

Follow the funder’s instructions: some CDC and USDA NIFA funding opportunities request a logic model. Describe the need in Situation, add quantity targets to outputs and write measurable outcomes. The CDC evaluation framework uses a logic model to describe the program before selecting evaluation questions and measures. Add a landscape PNG to an appendix if requested.

Is it free, and where does my data go?

Yes. Drawing and downloads are free and need no login. Logic models are drawn in your browser and are not uploaded; your draft is kept only in this browser tab. Edit in canvas needs a free account. A temporary copy passes the model to the canvas and is deleted when the canvas opens it; unused copies expire after 30 minutes and are cleared the next time you open this tool, or if the canvas tries to open an expired copy. The canvas keeps its working draft in this browser. Saving uploads the model to your account, and exporting sends it to our server. If you use the canvas AI assistant, the figure’s content is sent to our AI provider to answer your request.

Should I use a logic model or a conceptual framework?

A logic model describes how a program produces results for planning and evaluation. A conceptual framework describes relationships and hypotheses among research variables. Use the Conceptual Framework Maker for a research-variable diagram.
